Sphere Green

Climate action with every transaction.

Sphere Green gives eligible businesses a way to connect everyday commerce with an estimated carbon footprint and, where the offer includes it, a verified offset.

It complements Sphere’s payment technology.

A phone beside a coffee cup on a café table, showing a footprint estimate, a category breakdown, and an offsetting control, with bushland and water beyond the window.

What Sphere Green is

A measure-and-offset offer for eligible banks and merchants. Transaction-level carbon estimates, optional offsetting through checked projects, and reporting support where that part of the offer applies. Impact figures are published only with evidence from the bank or merchant arrangement. This page does not quote a tonne, a percentage, or a customer total.

How participation works

An eligible organisation connects the payments it is allowed to use. Sphere estimates CO2e for those transactions. Offsetting, when it is part of the offer, uses verified projects and can be presented to the customer or handled as a business offset.

The outcomes it supports

Customers of an eligible programme can see an estimate of the footprint tied to spending, and act through an offset when that option is switched on. The business can use the same transactional view for its own footprint and for downstream emissions reporting where the offer includes reporting.

How impact is measured

The estimate uses qualified emissions data, cleansed payment data, and an industry-level attribution. It is an estimate. No public impact figure is stated here without that evidence.

What customers see

In an eligible experience, a customer can see the estimated footprint of a purchase and, where offsetting is offered, a way to direct that estimate to a verified project. The screen depends on the bank, merchant, or rewards arrangement.

Eligibility

Banks and merchants it applies to.

Banks

Banks that are set up to pass eligible card and wallet transactions into Sphere can offer insights, and offsetting where that is part of their programme.

Merchants

We can work with merchants that use Shopify actively today -please ask us for more information. Note that our integrated Sphere Green Clover setup is currently a work in progress.

FAQs

Questions about the estimate.

What does the estimate represent?

Sphere estimates carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) for a consumer purchase. CO2e converts greenhouse gases into an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide so they can be compared. The figure is an estimate aligned to the transaction, not a measured reading from the product itself.

How is the estimate produced?

Sphere aligns industry-sourced emissions data with payment information, attributes it at an industry level, and calibrates it over time.

Is the number exact?

No. It is a close estimate from eligible card and wallet transactions. Sphere continues to refine the method and add data sources.

What can a customer do with it?

An eligible programme can show the estimate and offer offsetting through verified projects that have been through impact checks. What the customer sees depends on the bank or merchant arrangement.
